LANSING, MICH. -- The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is enacting several changes that will affect camping at its state parks and recreation areas to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
State-managed lands, trails and parks remain open, and campgrounds currently open at state parks will remain open as well, the DNR said in a release Wednesday. However, state park headquarters buildings and contact stations are now closed to the public, which will affect walk-up reservations.
Campers should plan to have a reservation before reaching the park because there may be limited access for self-check-in via cell phone if customers arrive without a reservation, the release said.
Current reservation holders who want to modify their reservation to a date beyond May 15 can do so without incurring any fees by calling the reservation call center at 800-447-2757.
Toilet-shower buildings will be closed at modern campgrounds, but vault toilets at campgrounds, day-use areas and boating access sites will remain open.
State forest campgrounds will remain open as well, with self-registration.
Mini-cabins, cabins, yurts, shelters and lodges will be closed until May 15.
Additionally, the DNR has temporarily suspended requirement of the $12 annual Recreation Passport required for entry to state parks and recreation areas.
Further updates about changes and closures at DNR facilities can be found at Michigan.gov/DNRClosures.
