A death investigation is underway after officials said a woman fell over the edge of Laurel Fork Falls.
Pickens County coroner Kandy Kelley said Taylor Coleman, of Simpsonville, was camping with friends Sunday. Pickens County Emergency Management said dispatch received a call around 4 a.m. to rescue a woman who had fallen 75 feet over the edge of the falls.
Sign up for our NewslettersSeveral crews from Pickens and Oconee County were dispatched. Officials said the rescue site was a remote area just north of Lake Jocassee, near the county lines. Crews used ATV's and a boat in the search. They eventually reached Coleman, 25, and providing medical service to her.
However, when crews could not retrieve Coleman, they called for the SC Helicopter Rescue Team, consisting of the National Guard and the State Fire Emergency Response Team, to assist. Coleman was flown to Prisma Health-Upstate in Greenville, where she was pronounced dead.
An autopsy will be performed Monday.
